Fijian-Hawaiian Music Legend Fiji Dies at 55 in Homeland

George Brooks Veikoso, celebrated for hits like “Lia” and “Born & Raised,” passed away in Fiji surrounded by family, leaving a profound legacy in Pacific reggae.

Fiji (George Brooks Veikoso), the revered Fijian-Hawaiian recording artist, died Wednesday in his homeland of Fiji at age 55, surrounded by family. The award-winning singer, songwriter, and producer was a pillar of Hawaii’s music scene since moving there in 1987.

Born May 10, 1970, Fiji grew up singing in church before rising to fame with his 1994 debut album Evolution. His 1996 album Born & Raised cemented his stardom, featuring hits like “Lia,” “Symphony of Love,” “Nasty,” and “Good Thing.” His electrifying live shows – often featuring Fijian drummers and dancers – headlined events like the annual Birthday Bash with Kapena.

  • 🏆1998 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards: Male Vocalist + Favorite Entertainer of the Year
