The singer’s first single in 15 years features raw lyrics about emotional distance and broken promises amid their separation.

Jessica Simpson’s newly released single “Fade” offers a poignant glimpse into her marital struggles with ex-husband Eric Johnson. The 45-year-old singer debuted the soulful rock track on July 22 – her first music release since January’s separation announcement – with lyrics that directly address emotional disconnect:
“You can always say you love me / That doesn’t mean that I feel loved… / You’re as empty as your promise / Go sleep alone in the bed you made.”
Simpson performed the song during her Today show Citi Concert Series set on July 23, telling the audience: “It’s insane to be back after 15 years.” She humorously addressed a pink corset wardrobe malfunction mid-performance: “I think my boobs stayed in, so it’s okay.”

The lyrics reflect her January statement confirming the couple was “living separately navigating a painful situation.” In “Fade,” she vows: “I won’t repeat this history” and declares “there won’t be a next time / ‘Cause I won’t break,” while expressing a desire for her heart “to feel held safe.”
On Instagram last week, Simpson teased the track as confrontation to “heal a layer of pain” written during a “rough place.” She and Johnson, 45, married in 2014 after meeting in 2010 and share three children: Maxwell (13), Ace (12), and Birdie (5).
